The #Adoration of the #Magi by #Giotto (1303-1305), one of the many amazing frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. §§§ THE TRUE MEANING OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE EPIPHANY IN THE CHRISTIAN WORLD Today, January 6, according to Christian tradition, the #Epiphany is celebrated, a feast in which the child Jesus manifests himself to the world, to the Magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Baldassarre, who have come to pay him homage, guided by the Comet. Their gifts have a symbolic value: gold is for his royalty, incense is for his divinity, myrrh (scented resin used in ancient times for anointing) is in anticipation of his tragic fate. The truest meaning of this holiday, which is celebrated today in the Christian world, should represent the meeting point between various ethnic groups. As the little Jesus, still in swaddling clothes, between his parents, Mary and Joseph, the ox and the donkey present in the stable according to the millenary tradition of the Church, welcomed the humble Jewish shepherds and the three Magi, so today we should welcome the humblest on earth. Today, a time when the pandemic returns with a blow of the tail to claim other victims, having deluded most that it would disappear during the summer, the world situation appears even more disastrous with central Africa battered by ethnic conflicts, the horn of Africa infested with famine, Kashmir in the throes of unjustified violence, Syria in a ten-year war, Iraq shaken by the past war and Palestine even more battered. Not to mention Libya, Somalia, and other areas of the world in the throes of unrest and wars. Overall the devastated areas where peace does not reign, the Pope's cry of pain rises high today to restore confidence in the fragility and hope of so many children. Will these peoples, humble among the humble, be granted the vaccine, not only anti-pandemic but also all those vaccines aimed at warding off deadly diseases of children and adults? The selfishness of a few, of the richest globally, has devastated the whole world. Be this the year of the turning point or never again. Because only from great pain, such as that experienced by humanity in 2020, can the flower of hope and universal love be born. By Franca Colozzo |
